Abstrakt

Deconversion, the process of losing religious faith, is a widespread phenomenon that has not been studied enough. Similar to the process of conversion, there are several ways to understand and explain deconversion. This paper argues that deconversion is closely linked to late modernity. This is evident not only through the significant increase in conversions in Western countries, but also because the conditions of late modernity make it easier to leave one’s religious faith. Deconversion becomes a means of constructing, reconstructing, and negotiating individual identity. In some cases, it can lead to a major shift in one’s identity narrative. It is believed that in late modernity, deconversion takes on unique forms due to the influence of new digital technologies. Additionally, it has significant social and psychological effects on the individual.
